this picture was taken last december when juri and i were in Chicago.  david donated his personal library and reprints to the ASU center for biology and society, so i was there to help david organize, pack, and ship the 50 boxes we prepared.  phew...

david passed away a few months ago after a number of physical setbacks, the major one being pancreatic cancer.  his memorial service was held last saturday (oct. 23). david was an important figure in the history, philosophy, and social studies of biology...you can read my short bio of him here.

personally, david was very supportive of me and was the reason i wanted to pursue history and philosophy of biology.  i met david while taking his philosophy of biology course at northwestern and subsequently took his biomedical ethics course.  he wrote a very nice letter for me when i was applying to graduate programs and we managed to stay in touch over the years.  i saw him at various conferences, hosted him for a linnaeus conference we held in san francisco, and tried to see him whenever i was in chicago.  he loved to eat at this thai restaurant down the street from his house...

i'll share one funny story about david.  last fall when i visited him he asked me if i wanted any books.  of course! he was giving away books from his library and told me i could take whatever i wanted.  so i packed up whatever i could fit into two small boxes and brought them back to arizona with me.  about a week later, i get an email from david asking if i had found any money in the books.  turns out that he kept his spare cash in his books.  i leafed through all the books and sure enough, there was his money.  fast forward a few months to december, when we were packing away his books to ship back to ASU.  david pulls me aside and tells me, "grant, i forgot which book i put my money in."  so, we had to leaf through every book prior to boxing them up...aah, good times.

if you want to read one thing that david hull wrote, might i suggest you read his paper, "on human nature"? email me if you want a PDF and i'd be happy to send it to you.  david will be missed...
