i tried playing a round of golf yesterday...quit after the 10th hole because, well, because it was in the mid 110s.  car said it was 120 when i got in...today was 116.  glad this is my last summer here.

the beginning of NBC's telecast of the final round of the us open yesterday had a visual montage of american patriotism interwoven with children reciting the pledge of allegiance.  notably, the phrase, "under God, indivisible" was omitted.  dan hicks, the commentator, later read a statement that it was not NBC's intent to offend anyone and they regretted the omission.  alright. fine.

as you might expect, there's been a lot of discussion on twitter and the blogosphere about this.  atheists calling the religious dumb, religious people calling atheists un-american and heathens, etc.  yeah. whatever.  personally, i think NBC shouldn't edit the pledge at all.  recite the whole thing verbatim or don't use it at all.

the thing that i don't get, and what bugs me, is when people back up NBC's stupidity by claiming that "under God" wasn't even in the original pledge of allegiance.  it was added in the 1950s.  okay.  so what?  THAT makes NBC's omission okay?  oh, women shouldn't be allowed to vote...after all, the right to vote was only added later as an amendment.  it's not as if NBC was reciting the original pledge from 1892.  they were reciting the one we all know today.  and the omission was a boneheaded move. simple as that.

companies start spamming you (without consent and not autotrader's
fault) about the car and other non-car related services. certainly a
nuisance, but here's where google voice rocks. I can immediately block
those callers and they'll receive "not in service" responses next time
they try to call. I never fear giving out my google voice number
because of this feature (and others)...also love the free text
messaging, too.

[11:30am] in line at the ala moana apple store waiting for the ipad 2, which sells at 5pm today.  i got here at 9:30am when the mall officially opened, but there were already about a dozen people queued up.  many came as soon as the tsunami warning was lifted and the roads were opened.  

ala moana is near the beach, just a hundred yards or so from the water.  i think the roads near the mall were closed until around 8am this morning.

the lines are longer than most people probably expected. this is due to most schools being closed b/c of the tsunami, many city and county workers are on "friday furlough", and ship times for online ipad 2 orders via apple.com are now showing 2-3 weeks.  

i'll post pics soon...and update as often as i can.

we went to a taping of "hot in cleveland" a couple weekends ago.  you can read about the whole taping experience on valerie bertinelli's blog. it was a long evening...we were there for 4-1/2 hours.  and i used up my year's quota of fake laughing (so now you'll know why i didn't laugh at your joke), but it was a fun experience and we loved all the actors, especially betty white, who is as awesome as advertised.

oh, and the fake laughing is not because the show isn't funny (it is!), but because you have to laugh at the fifth take as well as all the other takes before it.  go watch the show...it's good!

worked on a number of projects this past week...finally finished two amps that i had started a couple years ago but just needed some loose ends tidied up.  the millet hybrid amps are pretty easy to build, relatively inexpensive, and sound terrific.  i had to get holes drilled for the case in the maxed version (the silver one above), which my friends ryan and trent helped with...a few mods here and there and i finally completed it...the minimax (black case) had some fit issues with the wiring and re-soldering kinda sucks.  but, it works, sounds great, and i'm happy with it. 

i also built a mini-mini cable using some neutrik connectors and canare star quad cable, which i have a bunch of...it's pretty.

my imac's camera hadn't been working for over a year since i last got it serviced...last time i installed a new hard drive in it i saw that some wires had detached from the camera's circuit board.  so i decided to try and fix it...and it works!  the wires are tiny and it was hard to not create bridges between the solder connections, but i guess i did a good job b/c the camera now works.  video ichat/facetime anyone?

projects also include some cooking ones...decided to make some cinnamon rolls, which turned out okay.  but i have a better sense of what to do next time.  i baked it a bit too long for one thing.  but i also need to let it rise a little longer so the dough gets more airy and chewy.  good experience...not hard at all...though it takes time b/c of all the waiting.

up ahead: re-tiling part of the shower in the master bath...installing the fireplace mantle i built...and we'll see how adventurous i am.

i roasted two batches of coffee yesterday, Ka'u moonbeans and one of my all-time favorites, a Kenya Gethumbwini Peaberry. both are excellent beans with very very different flavor profiles.  but what's so interesting to me is how different they look and how different they roast.  using the behmor, the ka'u moonbeans hit first crack at about 2:30 remaining at my roast profile (1#, P3, C 8+, 8- right after start) and i had to add time at the end to just hear the first few snaps of second crack before hitting the cool cycle.

the gethumbwini peaberry, on the other hand, hit first crack somewhere around 5 minutes remaining, and i let it go about a minute into 2nd crack (which i normally don't do) before cooling.  its much darker than i usually roast, but should be okay.  in my experience, the gethumbwini peaberry actually does pretty well with a longer roast...imparts a bit of a tobacco finish to the coffee.

above, the first pic is of the ka'u moonbeans.  very even-colored, very smooth, very nice beans.  the kenya is much smaller and darker because of the roast, but still a very nice texture and even color.  both are awesome...i'm drinking the ka'u at the moment and it's very smooth and very mild, typical of the kona varieties.  i'm expecting a much different brew tomorrow morning when i try the kenyan...
