Temperature yesterday. Supposed to be hotter today. But the main issue
is that it's also been humid. Not 90% like out east, but 50% in this
heat is really awful.
It would also give the police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. Opponents have decried it as an open invitation for harassment and discrimination against Hispanics regardless of their citizenship status.
yet another embarrassment coming out of the 48th state, my current home. it really is a great place - awesome surroundings, good people, lots to do - but the crap that goes on there is mind-boggling.
In early April, the Flagstaff, Ariz., school district’s preliminary list of people who might not have jobs next year included almost a third of its 1,500 employees — every art, music and physical education teacher, every counselor and librarian, every teacher with three or fewer years in the district, and all temporary hires.
i'm a scientist and certainly think math and science is important in a child's education. but i hate how the first things cut are the arts - as if they're not as important. perhaps it's because my wife is an artist and art teacher who is directly affected by these budget cuts in arizona. regardless, i wish music and art weren't the first things to go whenever cuts are discussed...
went hiking over the weekend with ricky, mavis, kara, and david...arizona is simply beautiful right now with all the wildflowers in bloom. we've had a lot of rain the last few months (relatively speaking, for the desert) and things are so green. here are some pics from the hike...bet you never thought the desert could be so beautiful, huh?
also, in the second photo, check out the bird that was nesting in the cactus...pretty cool!
i'm ashamed that this could happen in my state of residence, though it doesn't surprise me. arizona is, well, very conservative (close-minded, prejudiced, and discriminatory, to be exact). it's no wonder that science and math education in this state is near the bottom nationally.
more pics from our white mountains camping trip. the hikes were beautiful and the days were splendid. evenings were cold...and, as you can see, the campsite was empty (we were the only people there). the first pic is of us trying out our new tent (bought a year ago but never used)...we had to do it in the dark when we arrived at the campsite so it was good for us to do it at home first.
juri and i spent the weekend in the white mountains, about 5 hours north-east of phoenix. we spent a few days there last summer and enjoyed it a lot and thought we'd return. it was much cooler...in the low 30s at night! our mummy bags saved us. but the days were fantastic! got to hike the Thompson trail again...it wasn't as picturesque as it was last summer, when we saw a lot of cool mushrooms and foliage. on the second day we did the Indian Spring trail, a 7.5 mile loop. about half of it went through the woods, where the aspen were fantastic (see pics and video)...my feet were blistered pretty well by the end of the hike, but i think it was worth it.
see the cool cooking center i made near our main fire pit? cool, huh? made pizza, soup, and fajitas on that stove.
